The Kenya eTA form is not difficult because it asks mysterious questions. It becomes difficult when the safari is still vague, the hotel name changes halfway through the application, or one passport digit is entered in a hurry.
This Kenya eTA guide takes the process in the order a traveller actually needs it: eligibility first, documents second, a careful application third, then an offline travel folder for the airport. Requirements and exemptions can change, so every button below points back to the Kenyan government rather than an imitation application service.

Start with eligibility, not the application form
Do not assume that advice given to a friend with a different passport applies to you. Kenya's official general information page lists exempt categories and nationalities, while the application start page provides a live country search.
Check every traveller separately. Nationality, travel document, residence status and purpose can change the answer. A Kenyan permanent resident, an East African Community passport holder, a visitor from another exempt country and a tourist who needs an eTA should not all follow the same path.
The exemption list is exactly the kind of information that changes through regulation. That is why this page does not turn a live government list into a permanent promise. Search the official portal using the passport that will be presented for travel.

If the result is unclear, contact the eTA service through the details displayed on the government site. Do this before paying a third-party website to interpret the rule.
Use the genuine Kenya eTA website
The official address is short: https://etakenya.go.ke/. The site identifies the Directorate of Immigration Services, which sits within Kenya's Ministry of Interior and National Administration.
Before entering passport or card details, read the domain character by character. Search advertisements and lookalike pages can appear above the official result. A private service may charge extra, and its involvement does not give the application special treatment by immigration.
Save the genuine address as a bookmark. If you stop and return later, open the bookmark rather than an email link you were not expecting. The portal also has a status check, so there is no reason to hand an application reference to a stranger offering to “speed it up.”
The official support details shown by the portal include the email address etakenya@immigration.go.ke, telephone +254 717 436 070 and WhatsApp +254 110 922 064. Check the portal itself before using those details in case the service changes them.
The documents most tourists should prepare
The official Kenya eTA guidance tells ordinary visitors to prepare:
- a passport valid for at least six months after the planned arrival, with at least one blank page
- a selfie or passport-style photograph
- an email address and telephone number
- arrival and departure itinerary details
- accommodation confirmation
- a payment method
Additional documents depend on nationality, residence, purpose and the answers in the form. Business travellers may be asked for a company invitation and registration. Family visitors may need a host letter and the host's identity document. Medical, conference, employment and resettlement travel has its own evidence.
Do not upload a random collection simply because it looks thorough. Follow the fields presented for the traveller. A clear, readable document that answers the request is better than a large file full of unrelated pages.
Build one clean application folder
Create a folder for each traveller before opening the form. A sensible naming system might be:
- 01-passport-photo-page
- 02-selfie
- 03-arrival-flight
- 04-departure-flight
- 05-first-hotel
- 06-safari-itinerary
- 07-additional-document-requested
Open every image at full size. Passport numbers, dates and the machine-readable lines must be legible. A photograph that looks fine as a thumbnail may be blurred when an immigration officer enlarges it.
Keep the confirmed itinerary beside you. If the first night is in Nairobi, use the Nairobi hotel, not the lodge you are most excited about three days later. If the safari is customised, the organiser can provide a concise itinerary with dates, locations, accommodation and contact details.

Passport validity and the passport you will carry
The official tourist guidance requires at least six months of passport validity after the planned arrival and one blank page. Check the date before buying a non-refundable flight. “Six months when I apply” is not the same as six months when I arrive.
Apply with the passport you will carry. If you renew, replace or lose that passport after approval, do not assume the old eTA transfers automatically. Ask the official service what to do and keep the answer with the new document.
Dual nationals should decide which passport will be used for the whole Kenya entry process. The airline record, eTA and document at the border should tell one consistent story.
Names deserve the same attention. Enter them as the passport shows them, including the order and spelling requested by the form. Do not convert a middle name into an initial because that is how an airline ticket happens to display it.
Children, infants and group applications
Where an eTA is required, the official guidance applies to infants and children as individual travellers. A child travels on their own passport details and needs their own approval.
The portal allows a couple or group to begin together, but the official FAQ says an eTA is required for each passenger. “Group application” is a way to organise submissions, not one authorisation shared by the family.
Parents and guardians should check that:
- the child's passport will meet the validity requirement on arrival
- the child's photo meets the portal instructions
- the travel dates and accommodation match the adults' application
- any consent or relationship document requested for the journey is ready
- every approval PDF is saved under the correct traveller's name
At the airport, do not keep five PDFs with nearly identical file names. Add the passport holder's name to each saved copy without altering the document itself.

Transit passengers need to know whether they cross the border
The official guidance exempts passengers who arrive and leave on the same aircraft, or transfer to another aircraft without leaving the airport precincts. That description is precise. A traveller who must collect luggage, enter Kenya, stay overnight or travel between airports may not fit it.
Ask the airline whether baggage is checked through and whether the connection remains airside. Nairobi has Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for most international flights and Wilson Airport for many safari services. A connection between JKIA and Wilson requires entering Kenya and travelling across the city.
If the itinerary includes that transfer, treat Kenya as an entry, not a simple airside connection. Check eTA eligibility, allow road time and arrange the airport handover. The Kenya safari safety guide explains the transfer plan in more detail.
When should you apply?
The official portal says applications are usually processed within three working days and recommends submitting at least two weeks before travel. Those statements are not contradictory. Three working days is a normal processing expectation, while two weeks gives room for verification, corrections, weekends and delayed documents.
Do not build the trip around the shortest possible approval time. Confirm enough of the itinerary to answer accurately, then apply with a comfortable margin. If travel is close, the official FAQ describes an expedited service, but availability and price should be checked on the live portal.
Avoid submitting duplicate applications because an email did not arrive quickly. First check the status tool, spam folder and application reference. Then contact official support. Multiple records with slightly different details can make your own tracking harder.
What the Kenya eTA costs
The official service charter and eTA FAQ list the standard application from USD 30, excluding payment charges. The FAQ also describes expedited processing for an additional USD 100. The checkout page is the final source for the application type and amount selected.
Fees may differ by service and are not a promise of approval. A card charge proves that a payment was attempted or accepted. It does not replace the immigration decision.
Before paying, check:
- the browser still shows etakenya.go.ke
- the traveller name and passport number are correct
- the application type is the one intended
- the amount and any card charge are visible
- the email address can receive the receipt and decision
Save the receipt, but label it “payment” rather than “approval.”
Receipt, payment and approval are three different moments
After submission, the official process may generate separate emails for receipt of the application, receipt of payment and the immigration decision. Only the approval document allows the traveller to proceed on the basis of an eTA.
The official FAQ says an approved traveller should print the attached PDF, download it to a mobile device or save it in the official app. It must be shown at departure and arrival points.
If the decision is a refusal, the same FAQ says the traveller cannot travel to Kenya at that time and should contact the official service for details. Do not pay someone on social media who claims to reverse the decision privately.
If there is no decision, use the portal's “Check Status” function with the reference number. Screenshotting a spinning browser page is not the same as checking the official record.
Review every field before submission
The easiest errors are also the most consequential:

Read the form once for facts and once for typing. If another person prepared it, the traveller should still check the identity declarations before submission.
The Directorate of Immigration's traveller obligations require truthful and accurate information. An eTA is for the purpose stated. It is not permission to work or ignore the conditions of stay.
Accommodation changes after approval
Safari accommodation sometimes changes because of availability or a route adjustment. That does not give this guide authority to decide whether an approved eTA must be amended.
Keep the revised itinerary and new booking confirmation. If the change affects a material answer in the application, ask the official eTA service and follow its written instruction. A small lodge swap within the same confirmed journey is different from changing the purpose, dates or passport.

Safari and beach combinations
A Kenya eTA covers entry to Kenya under its conditions. It does not automatically cover Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda or another country added to the journey.
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so a Masai Mara and Zanzibar itinerary crosses an international border. A Kenya coast extension to Diani, Watamu or Mombasa stays within Kenya. Those two trips may look similar on a mood board and have different entry paperwork.
Write every country and border crossing in order. Check entry and health rules with the authority for each destination. If the route returns to Kenya after visiting another country, confirm the required authorisation for re-entry rather than assuming the first approval covers every movement.

Scam avoidance without becoming afraid of the form
The most useful defence is simple: begin at etakenya.go.ke and keep control of the email address, reference number and payment.
Be cautious if a message:
- arrives from a domain that is not connected to the official service
- asks for a second payment through a personal account
- promises guaranteed approval
- threatens immediate cancellation unless you respond through WhatsApp
- asks for a passport copy after you already completed the official form, without an identifiable case reference
- tells you to install remote-access software
If a request may be genuine, do not reply first. Open the official portal from your bookmark, check status and contact the support details displayed there.
The travel organiser may help with hotel addresses and the itinerary. They should not ask you to surrender control of identity declarations or pretend they can overrule immigration.
What to carry on travel day
Keep the following together in hand luggage:
- the passport used for the application
- printed eTA approval, where required
- offline approval PDF on the phone
- arrival and departure itinerary
- first accommodation confirmation
- safari organiser and hotel contacts
- proof of onward or return travel
- health documents required for the route
- travel-insurance assistance details
The eTA is checked before and during travel, so do not rely on airport Wi-Fi or a single email app. A printed copy takes almost no space and helps when a phone battery dies.

If the application is delayed
First, identify what you actually have. Is it an application reference, payment receipt, request for more information or approval PDF?
Then:
- check the official status page
- check spam and filtered email folders
- confirm the email address entered in the form
- respond to a genuine document request through the official route
- contact official eTA support with the reference and passport details
- tell the airline or itinerary organiser if the travel date is close
Do not claim approval when asking for help if you only have a receipt. Precise language makes it easier for support to understand the problem.
